The reason for his torment was because he refused to divulge false confessions [6].

He was put into jail where he died, and that site became the place for the present day chapel [6].

Northeast to the city, it was the area where Olomouc began [6].

A thousand years ago, the Olomouc castle was at its greatest feat [6].

You can still see the castle’s foundations in the lower levels of the archdiocesan museum, which provides a detailed history of Olomouc’s past [6].

Czech King Wenceslas III was murdered in the castle in 1306, however his cause of death is still not clear to this day [6].

A gothic cathedral that was built between 1412 and 1540 [6].

The western tower is a ‘leftover’ from the original 13th century parish church [6].

The tower, which takes 200 steps to climb, provides the best view of the town [6].

The building dates from the 14th century, yet the original was damaged in WWII [6].

The complex comprises of a 1950s astronomical clock, which has a socialist style [6].

At noon, figures from the hall perform a little show [6].

The tower of the hall is opened daily by a guided tour, at 11am and 3pm [6].

Trips

Kromeriz is a smaller town south of Olomouc, which has an impressive main square that contains a 16th century renaissance town hall, yet its main attraction is the baroque archbishop’s chateau [6].

The chateau, which is a UNESCO site, was built in the late 17th century [6].

It contains a commanding tower that is 84 metres high, impressive interiors, decorative murals, a stunning art gallery, and the castle’s gardens [6].

The garden was established in the 17th century, and is an approximately 15-minute walk from the chateau [6].

Its main appeal is that it’s immaculately kept well [6].

The garden and chateau is only accessible by a guided tour [6].

Olomouc Experience

Olomouc is the hidden gem of the Czech Republic. Few people outside the country would know about it, yet that could be more of a reason to visit the charming town. When people see your photos, they’ll be genuinely intrigued, especially for its main attraction, ‘the holy trinity’. This stunning column is one of the best in Europe. It’s beautifully designed with golden plates. Apart from the column, the town has two picturesque squares that are filled with various fountains and surrounded by colourful buildings. This sight becomes even more special at sunset when the sun’s rays reflect on the architecture. I happen to stay a night here, which is enough to see the whole town, but you can easily spend a few days to relax and enjoy the day trips that are close. Overall, Olomouc is a town that you should include in your Czech itinerary. From my experience, it was my third favourite town of the country.
